Confident Windies arrive in Dhaka Wisden CricInfo staff - November 27, 2002
Roger Harper, West Indies' coach, said that his team will use the tour of Bangladesh to build on their impressive one-day win over India ahead of the World Cup. Speaking as West Indies arrived in Dhaka for the three-ODI, two-Test series, Harper was understandably upbeat at the prospect of taking on international cricket's whipping-boys. "We are confident of maintaining our good performance," Harper said. "We'll try to perform as we did in India, but we'll also be cautious about some of the hard-working Bangladeshi players." West Indies will have little time to acclimatise. They flew straight from Dhaka to Chittagong, where the first ODI will be played on Friday (Nov 29). Several big names are absent from their squad. Brian Lara is still recovering from hepatitis, Carl Hooper has returned to the Caribbean for surgery on a long-standing knee complaint, and Mervyn Dillon pulled out of the tour after sustaining an injury during the one-dayers in India. Even without those players, stand-in captain Ridley Jacobs should have few problems against a side who have lost 14 of their 15 Tests, including the last nine on the trot. Bangladesh's main aim at the moment is trying to take matches into a fourth day. West Indies Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ricardo Powell, Daren Ganga, Marlon Samuels, Ridley Jacobs (capt and wk), Vasbert Drakes, Jermaine Lawson, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Daren Powell, Cameron Cuffy, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore.
