The Basil conundrum Wisden CricInfo staff - November 22, 2002
I have a quiz question I can't answer – can you help? "He and D'Oliveira are the only two in the 20th century – who is it?" asks Calvin Priest I suppose this could be almost anything – for example, only two people scored 158 in a Test against Australia in the 20th century. One was Majid Khan, for Pakistan at Melbourne in 1972-73, and the other was Basil D'Oliveira for England at the Oval in 1968. I think it's more likely that the question has something to do with the apostrophe in the middle of D'Oliveira's surname – the only other England Test player in the 20th century with one was Jack O'Connor of Essex, who played four Tests for England in 1929 and 1930.
