Pakistan saunter to victory
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 18, 2002

Close Pakistan 403 (Youhana 159) and 57 for 0 beat Zimbabwe 178 (Saqlain 7-66) and 245 (Waqar 4-78) by 10 wickets
Scorecard

Pakistan cantered to an emphatic 10-wicket victory shortly after lunch on the fourth day of the second Test at Bulawayo. Salim Elahi and Taufeeq Umar tore into Zimbabwe's new ball, and achieved their victory target of 57 inside nine overs. The win wrapped up the series 2-0, and went some way towards salvaging Pakistan's pride after their disasters in the desert against Australia.

At least they avoided an innings defeat, but Zimbabwe, who had resumed on 171 for 5, never recovered from losing Andy Flower to the fourth ball of the morning. Tatenda Taibu and Andy Blignaut, in their contrasting styles, held the tail together, but Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq, who completed a match haul of 10 for 155, could not be denied for long.

Flower had not added to his overnight 13 when Waqar trapped him on the back foot with a late inducker, and at 171 for 6, still 54 runs in arrears, Zimbabwe's hopes of a draw had evaporated.

The lost cause gave Blignaut licence to free his arms, although he had an early escape on 7, when Inzamam-ul-Haq missed a sharp chance to his left at slip. Blignaut was keen to take on Waqar's bouncer, and twice hooked him for six, although he was later dropped on the boundary attempting a third. Eventually it was Saqlain's subtler skills that accounted for him – Blignaut attempted to hoist him out of the ground, but was stumped by a distance (226 for 7). Blignaut's 41 had come from only 32 balls.

Taibu remained composed throughout his innings, and he found another, less volatile, ally in Mluleki Nkala, who made 14 before being given out caught behind off Saqlain. Ray Price added a useful 12 as Zimbabwe harboured hopes of setting an uncomfortable target, but Taibu's rearguard, and Zimbabwe's innings, came to an end straight after lunch, when Waqar picked up his fourth wicket of the innings.
