Gillespie to have fitness test Wisden CricInfo staff - November 17, 2002
Jason Gillespie will need another fitness test before Australia decide on the make up of their final XI for the second Test at Adelaide, which begins on Thursday. Gillespie is still troubled by the calf injury that almost kept him out of the first Test, but he is expected to be fit to play only his third Test on his home ground.
"He's continuing to improve and we decided to hold him back from playing club cricket because we felt that we didn't want to undo any good that he's gained through the week," said Errol Alcott, the Australian physio. "He's demonstrated that he can bowl all right but it's just that he felt a little tight. "He wasn't feeling any pain or anything untoward. I'll have a look at him tomorrow and we might not look at him bowl until Tuesday." If Gillespie is declared fit, Andy Bichel and Brett Lee will fight it out for the final spot. Bichel did little wrong at Brisbane, but Lee has been in storming form since being dropped. He has taken 21 wickets in two matches for New South Wales.
"Someone has to be 12th man and that's really all there is to it but we have to be convinced first that Jason Gillespie will be fit," said Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors. "We've got a couple of blokes who have played in the Sheffield Shield and played pretty well. The selectors will talk and we'll talk to the captain as well before any decision is made."
