Australian squad unchanged Wisden CricInfo staff - November 14, 2002
Australia's selectors have opted against including a second specialist spinner in their squad for the second Test against England, which starts at Adelaide on November 21. Trevor Hohns, chairman of selectors, said that the panel had decided to stick with the same squad which was chosen for the first Test. "There was the option to select two spinners in the squad but we have retained the same balance of attack we had in Brisbane. That balance, of three fast bowlers and one spinner in the final XI, has worked well for us in the past in most conditions and did the job well for us at the Gabba, so we saw no reason to change that mix for this Test match." Nathan Hauritz, the Queensland offspinner, would have been the likely choice as back up to Shane Warne, had a second spinner been chosen. Hauritz was part of the squad in the recently concluded three-Test series against Pakistan, but didn't play a single Test. As in the first Test, the third seamer's spot will be a two-horse race between Andy Bichel and Brett Lee. Bichel had an ordinary match at Brisbane, taking 2 for 74 in the only innings be bowled, while Lee pressed his claims with a ten-wicket haul for New South Wales against Tasmania last weekend.
