ICC to study referee's report Wisden CricInfo staff - November 6, 2002
The International Cricket Council has said it wants to study match referee Mike Procter's report before passing judgment on the crowd trouble that marred the first ODI between India and West Indies at Jamshedapur today. The game was interrupted twice by spectators throwing missiles. The most serious incident came with West Indies just 12 runs from victory. Bottles were hurled onto the playing area and a number of fires were lit in the stands. Both sides left the field for 15 minutes while order was restored. Malcolm Speed, chief executive of ICC, said: "It is disappointing that a game has been interrupted, and Mike's report will help us understand why this has taken place." Speed added that player safety was paramount and that incidents of this type should not happen. "ICC and representatives of both the boards and the players are working together through the Safety and Security Steering Group to ensure that every country has in place effective safety and security plans at all venues." Procter said that the disturbances were potentially dangerous. "It was very scary to see firecrackers were being thrown into the ground and bursting close to the fielders," he said. "Both teams displayed their professional outlook and carried on after the police moved in to curb the violence." © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
