Old spin, new bottle Wisden CricInfo staff - November 1, 2002
Spin accounted for 70% of the balls Shivnarine Chanderpaul faced today, and yielded him 97 of the 135 runs he scored. He tamed the Indian spinners by playing late, straight and close to his body. Playing with the turn, he got 70% of his runs in the arc between square leg and midwicket. Chanderpaul scored 75% of his runs in the morning session against Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, a precursor of what was to come. He was quick on his feet, stepping forward 58% of the time against the spinners. Over two-thirds of the deliveries he faced were met with the middle of the bat in a dominant batting display - the ball only passed the edge five times all day.
As many as 80% of his pre-lunch runs came to the on side, and the Indian spinners (particularly Virender Sehwag) bowling a negative line outside leg in the second session did not bother him either, as he picked off 51 runs from the 65 balls - 32 of them pitched outside leg stump - the spinners sent down before tea.
Twelve of the 16 fours he hit today were off the spinners, though he didn't once step outside the crease. Minimum effort, maximum results ... and red faces on the Indian side.
