3rd Test Perth - Day 1 (part 2)
Matt Smith - 30 November 2002

In Brisbane it was "Sammy's Barmy Army".

Now here in Perth, it became "Jane Smith's Barmy Army".

The reason, for the new version, the England fans decided to change sports for the evening and support the England Women's hockey team, playing in the World Cup here in Perth.

After the final ball was bowled at the WACA, with Australia already in firm control of the game, the Army piled onto buses to head for hockey's version of the Ashes, England versus Australia.

Inside the ground, after a couple of quick beers to lubricate the vocal cords, the England fans took their position on the grass verge.

It's doubtful if a women's hockey game has ever experienced such an atmosphere, with the Barmy Army offering the team the same level of support normally reserved for the cricket side.

The game started at a fast and furious pace, and to the delight of the visiting fans, England were awarded a penalty flick.

Unfortunately, Jane Smith's shot was well saved.

It perhaps came as no surprise to a group of fans well used to spurned chances and missed opportunities.

And you feared the worst when Australia took the lead soon after,

The mandatory response from the Army was aired.

"We're going to win 5-1".

To England credit, they did respond and quickly equalised through Leisa King.

The crowd went wild, as if an injury time winner had just been scored in the cup final.

Maybe this moment was symbolic of how little success the Army have had to cheer about on tour so far.

It was perhaps testament to the high level of skill, effort and technical ability on show, that the eyes of the England fans were glued to events on the pitch.

Or was it something else holding the Army's attention?

Australia scored again before half time, and with England chasing the game and down to ten players, Australia scored a third late in the second half.

A particular mention should go to Anna Bennett, England's number 8, who's dribbling and tireless running drew genuine appreciation from the crowd. She was many supporters' choice for man ... sorry ... 'player' of the match.

It gave the final scoreline a 3-1 Australia victory.

The way things are going, many England fans would accept this result in the cricket.

In sharp contrast to the cricket team, the hockey players showed their appreciation of the support they had received.

They came over and embraced the fans, literally in the case of some players, who came right over to the delight of the England fans.

Despite the result, the Barmy Army seemed to really enjoy the occasion. It was something completely different. One fan was even heard to say it had been his best day on tour overall.

The women had certainly provided the Army a few more cheers.
