Hampshire's new 1st Team manager reports from Perth ..
Vic Isaacs - 27 November 2002

Dimi And Derek have come out to Perth with contrasting emotions. Dimi has had another good season for hampshire whilst Derek suffered what befalls most players in their careers and that is a bout of poor form culminating in being left out of the 1st team.

Both to me have very important futures ahead for the club so it paramount that they as well as all the staff players continue to work and improve their games. So far both ,along with a few others i have over from other clubs, have been working really hard.

For Dimi coming to Perth is returning home and with that he has a lot of friends to catch up with. Balancing the social and business part of his life is probably harder here than in England but he knows that sacrifices have to be made to realise the talent that he has. For Kenners this winter represents a chance to start playing well again but most importantly to rekindle his enjoyment of the game.

Dimitri Mascarenhas
Dimi is probably for the 1st time in a number of years relatively free of injury. He has suffered with heel problems in the last 2 years and being the type of person he is he has suffered quietly and got on with his game and been reasonably successful. I am hoping that with a winter of practice behind him and a little more fitness then we will see his huge talent begin to unfold some more.

He has been working in a few areas with Bruce Reid the former Australian quick and nearly a Hampshire player himself but for a back injury. I am hopeful that Bruce will add a new dimension to his bowling which in English conditions has already proved successful but to keep getting better results needs to continue to go up a notch. His form with the ball for his club side Melville has been excellent. Add his exciting ability with the bat and you can understand why his name has been spoken of in the past as a potential English international player.

Derek Kenway
Only last year Kenners was spending his winter away with the national academy so it seems strange to say that he is now out here trying to restablish his game to where it was at before.

Everyone suffers form slumps and the character of a person is put strongly to the test in how they react to this. Kenners would be the first to admit that he didn't handle it too well as he had never had to deal with poor form before and probably a lot of expectancy after being on the academy. Seeing him train and practice over here I am sure Hampshire will see a resurgent player again next season. Everyone knows he has great talent to burn. Mentally last season was a great test and a huge learning experience for him. He will be better for it.
