Swearing Debate: Part 1
Barmy Army - 19 November 2002

By Prince Harry, 16 Nov 2002 02:55:45 GMT

Its hard to condemn swearing at a sporting event when most of us have been brought up amid songs and chants at Footy games which seem acceptable and part of the culture etc etc.

However I personally felt a bit uncomfortable at Brisbane simply because our lads and lasses dominate the atmosphere so completely that every word is clear and echoed around the ground. The F word and other stuff seemed to take the essence of what the Barmy Army represents a step backward.

There is no other country that can boast supporters with such sarcasm, whit and irony in their songs and chants. The BA traditional songs are classics but I found it fun and refreshing some of the footy songs that were bought over.

Perhaps a compromise of old and new and a few less of the harsher words will show Adelaide how far behind the Ausiies are in character and humour etc.

I couldn't agree more. Non stop 'F' singing and banter is boring, and demonstrates a lack of education.
