Surrey young trio sign on
Surrey CCC Media Release - 7 November 2002

Surrey are pleased to announce that young players Tim Murtagh and Phil Sampson have signed extensions to their contracts and that James Benning has signed his first full time contract with Club.

Right arm fast-medium bowler Murtagh, who is 21, has agreed a new three year contract. He played five first-class matches for Surrey last season as well as recording his first five wicket haul for the Club against Leicestershire of 5-39. He played for England in the 2000 Under 19 World Cup in Sri Lanka where he averaged 17.22 with the ball and was England's top wicket taker in the Tournament.

All-rounder Benning, who will not be 20 until May, has agreed a two-year deal with the Club. He has already played three limited overs matches as well as representing England at U-19 level.

Right arm fast-medium bowler Phil Sampson, who is 22 years old has signed a new two year contract with the Club. Phil played in two first class matches for the Club last season and averaged 21.5 with the ball.

Keith Medlycott, the Cricket Manager said:

"We are extremely pleased to have agreed new deals with Tim and Phil. Tim and Phil finished the season especially strongly taking 13 wickets between them in the last game of the season against Leicestershire. James impressed in the Norwich Union League as well as with England U-19s and we have rewarded him with his first full time contract. We are hoping that they can continue to improve their games and carry on the Club's tradition of producing quality first-class and International cricketers"
