David Lloyd
Wisden CricInfo staff - May 30, 2002
Wisden overview A chirpy, intelligent Accrington lad, affectionately known as "Bumble" (he talks a lot and with an engaging Lancastrian burr), David Lloyd had a high promise but this was blighted in mid-career by being a front-line batsman against Thomson and Lillee on the daunting 1974-75 tour of Australia, and by the responsibility of being county captain between 1973 and 1977, a job which on the whole he relished little. A neat, strong left-hander with all the shots and sometimes exceptional flair in attack, he was also an under-used left-arm spinner and a brilliant close fielder. He made an immediate impact on Test cricket in 1974, scoring 214 not out in only his second Test, but the experience of the 1974-75 tour left him shell-shocked. Not that it affected his humour. Lloyd later became a live-wire coach of Lancashire and England, with a gift for direct communication, and a popular TV and radio commentator. He is also a fully-qualified umpire.
