Richards rides in
Wisden CricInfo staff - May 26, 2002

Buoyed by their Test-series victory over India, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have appointed two proven winners to head their selection panel. Sir Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge have replaced Michael Findlay and Joel Garner on the three-man committee, with Richards taking over the role of chief selector. They will work alongside Joey Carew, the former Trinidad and Tobago captain. Carew, who played for the West Indies between 1963 and 1972, is the only member of the previous panel to be retained.

Richards, the sixth-highest run-scorer in Test history, with 8540 runs from 121 matches (av. 50.23), coached the West Indies during the 1999 World Cup, before being replaced by Roger Harper in February 2000. Greenidge, who scored 7558 runs in 108 matches, coached Bangladesh in the same tournament.

The panel's first task will be to select the side for the final three one-day matches against India. West Indies then take on New Zealand in five one-day internationals and two Tests.

The Reverend Wes Hall, President of the WICB, was delighted at the appointments: "The WICB is privileged to welcome outstanding former West Indies cricketers such as Sir Vivian and Gordon Greenidge as new members of the panel along with experienced selector Joey Carew."
