Windies stronghold
Wisden CricInfo staff - May 24, 2002

  • There have been 12 one-day internationals in Jamaica. West Indies have won 11 of them, with their only defeat coming to Australia in 1990-91. India have yet to play a one-dayer here.
  • Captains winning the toss have opted to field nine times, winning six of those matches. Overall, the team winning the toss has gone on to win eight times out of 12.

  • Though teams batting first have won five matches and lost seven, they have scored at a faster rate – 4.72 – compared to 4.44 for teams batting second.

  • Seamers have done better than slow bowlers at this venue. Out of the 154 wickets that have fallen here, the fast bowlers have taken 119 at 28.23 (economy rate 4.22). Spinners have conceded 4.70 runs per over, and their 35 wickets have come at 45.46 apiece.

  • The highest individual score is Phil Simmons's 122 against South Africa in 1991-92, when West Indies also made a record total, 287 for 6. Malcolm Marshall's 4 for 23 against England in 1985-86 are the best bowling figures. Only two visiting bowlers have ever taken four-fors: Craig McDermott England's Steve Watkin.

  • There have been seven centuries in one-dayers at Sabina Park, and all of them have been scored by West Indians. Dean Jones's unbeaten 88 in 1990-91 remains the highest score by a visiting batsman. Australia won that match by 35 runs.

  • Only three times in 24 innings have teams crossed 250, all of them when batting first. The highest score by teams batting second was when West Indies overhauled New Zealand's 243 all out in 1995-96.
