Jayawardene answers his critics Wisden CricInfo staff - May 16, 2002
Mahela Jayawardene was delighted to finally make his first Test century overseas as Sri Lanka took charge at Lord's. Jaywardene made his ninth Test hundred, but his first outside Sri Lanka, in spite of a painful blow from Andrew Flintoff that made him call for a runner shortly after he reached his half-century.
"I got an inside edge against Flintoff onto my hip bone," Jayawardene said. "Our physio said I might need an X-ray. I can't put any weight on my back leg. "I couldn't play the pull shot but they kept bowling short so I had to do something. "I've had a lot of criticism about not getting hundreds abroad so to get one at Lord's is very sweet." England coach Duncan Fletcher admitted it had a been a tough day for his side: "The bowlers, especially before lunch, could have shown more patience and bowled with more discipline."
