Sobers: my finest knock Wisden CricInfo staff - May 11, 2002
What was Garry Sobers's best innings? His 365 not out against Pakistan in 1957-58, a Test record at the time? One of his many centuries against England? Well, according to Sir Don Bradman, it was actually a magnificent 254 at Melbourne in 1971-72, for the World XI against Australia in an unofficial Test match. Sir Don got most things right in cricket - and Sir Garry isn't inclined to disagree. Speaking exclusively to Wisden.com, he tells us some of the background to that famous innings, which came in a match notable for a bouncer war between Sobers and Dennis Lillee, then an up-and-coming newcomer in the Australian dressing-room. We also present some rare archive footage of that match, plus some observations from Farokh Engineer, Sobers's batting partner in the early part of that innings. Engineer, no slouch with the bat himself, remembers: "Our partnership lasted for 25-30 minutes, but all I can remember was saying 'great shot Sobie, well done Sobie'." Sir Garry, who scored 8032 runs and took 235 wickets in his glittering 93-Test career, was recently installed as a National Hero by his native island of Barbados.
