Clive Radley
Wisden CricInfo staff - May 7, 2002
Wisden overview A small, chunkily-built batsman from Norfolk, Clive Radley was always a consistent accumulator of runs. Effective rather than attractive, he watched the ball intently, cut well, and played skilfully within his limitations, often inventing his own strokes and running brilliantly between the wickets. Although a natural fighter, he proved suspect against the fast lifting ball in Australia, and played in only eight Tests. In the second of these, against New Zealand at Auckland in 1977-78, he made a marathon score of 158, and, one Test later, he added a second century against Pakistan at Edgbaston. As the elder statesman of the Middlesex side, he made his first double-century in 1985, and was rewarded with a new contract in 1986 when he often captained the county. Retiring a respected professional, he succeeded Don Wilson as head coach at Lord's. Christopher Martin-Jenkins
