Anwar back for Pakistan Wisden CricInfo staff - May 5, 2002
Pakistan have recalled experienced opener Saeed Anwar for the second Test against New Zealand, which starts on Wednesday.
Last week, the PCB ruled out the prospect of Anwar returning in the series, saying he needed four to six weeks practice before he would be considered for selection. However, after Shahid Afridi failed in Pakistan's massive innings-and-324-run victory over New Zealand in Lahore, the board decided to recall Anwar, a veteran of 55 Tests, into their 16-man squad. The 33-year-old Anwar, who now sports a long beard after becoming a devout Muslim, injured his right wrist during the Sharjah Cup in November last year and has since missed series against Bangladesh and West Indies as well as the first Test against New Zealand. Shoaib Akhtar is also in the squad, and is expected to recover in time from the ankle injury he suffered during the Lahore Test. Wasim Akram is also expected to play after being dropped to accommodate two spinners at Lahore. Akram, who last week announced he would retire after next year's World Cup, has missed Pakistan's last five Tests.
Meanwhile, the injury-plagued New Zealand squad suffered another blow when their talented all-rounder Andre Adams was ruled out for at least a month due to a stress fracture in the lumbar region of his back. Pakistan squad Waqar Younis (capt), Inzamam-ul Haq (vice-capt), Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Rashid Latif, Saqlain Mushtaq, Danish Kaneria, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Sami, Misbah-ul-Haq.
