Andre Adams set for debut Wisden CricInfo staff - March 26, 2002
Andre Adams has been added to New Zealand's squad for the final Test against England on his home ground at Auckland, while Chris Harris looks certain to play after being left out of the final XI at Wellington. Adams, the 26-year-old allrounder, was one of the stars of the recent one-day series against England, in which he averaged 81 with the bat and 21 with the ball, and looks set to make his Test debut. "Andre is a dynamic player who can make an impact with both the bat and the ball," chairman of selectors Sir Richard Hadlee said. "Being behind 1-0 in the series, we are in a position now where we need to take the initiative and make things happen."
Northern Districts quick bowler Daryl Tuffey also returns to the squad, having taken seven wickets on this ground against Pakistan a year ago, with Chris Martin paying the price for his pummelling at the hands of Andrew Flintoff. Matthew Horne is also omitted after struggling over 64 runs in four innings in the series. His absence suggests that Lou Vincent is likely to open, with Harris or Adams going in at No. 6. Harris is a key component of New Zealand's one-day side, but his last Test appearance was in 1999-2000, and his record - he averages 19 with the bat and 66 with the ball - is decidedly modest. His recall owes much to an Auckland pitch that is expected to get slower and lower as the match progresses.
