The first-innings hero Wisden CricInfo staff - March 25, 2002
Hail Andy Caddick, England's first-innings hero for a change. He must have devoured all that stuff about the discrepancy in his averages - before this game it was 104 first-innings wickets at a costly 36.62, against 86 in the second at a cool 20.40 - and decided to do something about it. Caddick now has 196 Test wickets, and moved past Jim Laker (193) on England's list during this spell. He's now only a good second-innings haul away from becoming the ninth bowler to take 200 for England. Caddick was well-grooved at Wellington, sending down only one really loose delivery, which Craig McMillan hit for four. Otherwise Caddick homed in on off stump, or just outside - 140 of his 173 deliveries shot down that chute. Only one ball went down the leg side, and only 15 even veered towards leg-and-middle. A telling statistic is the control factor - New Zealand's batsmen played uncontrolled shots to 46 of Caddick's deliveries, or 26.59% of them. They were in control of 127 of their shots, a figure which includes the 46 balls that were allowed to go through to James Foster. Caddick only conceded 57 runs off the bat - there were six extra runs from no-balls. Steven Lynch is Database Director of Wisden.com. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
