Shaking a leg
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 22, 2002

After a winter in which he probably wondered whether his bat had a middle, Lance Klusener was back to his unstoppable best at the Wanderers today. His 83 was typical Klusener, defined by a number of brutal shots over or through midwicket, and almost horizontal-bat shots down the ground. Our graph shows that Klusener scored 72% of his runs (60 out of 83) on the leg side, mostly through a series of muscular pick-ups and swats. And of his 20 runs on the off side, 15 were straight down the ground.

Klusener made 83% of his runs (69 out of 83) off deliveries on middle stump or further across to the leg side. They came off 59 balls, but Australia may have bowled too straight to him, with only 18 deliveries pitched on or outside off stump.

He was especially harsh on Andy Bichel, belting 38 off 19 balls. And though Nathan Hauritz bowled most of his overs before Klusener had hit top gear, he deserves a lot of credit for conceding only 14 off 28 balls. Whereas Bichel went for two runs per ball (12 an over), Hauritz went for one in two (three an over). Not bad for a man who had not even played first-class cricket a year ago.
