Don't underestimate this win
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 18, 2002

South Africa's win today against Australia cannot be under-estimated. The Australians had a deep desire to beat South Africa 3-0 here, and 6-0 over the two series. History suggests that a side chasing over 300 in the last innings of a Test match rarely wins, although recently it seems to be the order of the day. The fact that the pitch was just four days old might have contributed to making it easier as it had not had the time to wear out.

In order to make that score against this Australian side, especially considering the state of mind that the South Africans were in less than two weeks ago, suggests a massive turnaround. It started in Cape Town, where South Africa regained their pride despite defeat, and this win will ensure a stronger and more competitive team. Hopefully it will also highlight a number of shortcomings in selection and communication, and this lesson will be learnt very carefully for the future.

I felt at the beginning of this Test that both sides were demob-happy, but I take that back. It would seem that the pitch was not as easy to play on as everyone first thought, and I remember from my playing days that batting at Durban was often easier on the last day than the first.

The key to the match was Australia's second innings. Jacques Kallis bowled extremely well, using the offcutter effectively. The spirit looked better and Graeme Smith looks as though he has a big future in the game. Ashwell Prince has been a really good and surprising find. He has always had the talent, but seems to lack the concentration to bat on through those dangerous thirties and forties. I believe he will learn from that.

The coaches will also learn that in future their preparation must be better when they are facing Australia. There have been many critics from the commentary box, by those who have never been involved in that side of the game. The media have had a go as well - what's new? The important thing is that South African cricket learns from this experience and learns quickly.

The Australians too will not sit still. This defeat will hurt them - it always does, particularly if you are used to winning. Of course they have the satisfaction of winning the battle and the war, but funnily enough there is a pertinent saying that you are only a good as your last game.

We must count ourselves fortunate to have watched a great Australian side and some great cricket. They can be proud of their achievements and they are undoubtedly world champions.
