Kumble out of series Wisden CricInfo staff - March 14, 2002
Anil Kumble has been rested for the remaining two one-day internationals against Zimbabwe due to a shoulder injury, selectors said on Wednesday. Kumble also missed the third one-dayer, which Zimbabwe won by six wickets to gain a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. "Kumble is showing signs of weakness on his shoulder. He has been rested keeping in mind the surgery he underwent recently," the selectors said in a statement. The last two matches against the tourists will be played at Hyderabad on Saturday and at Guwahati two days later. Kumble has been replaced by left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, who is yet to play a one-dayer. India also included allrounders Yuvraj Singh and Vijay Bharadwaj in place of opener Shiv Sunder Das and offspinner Sarandeep Singh. The selectors said the team for the upcoming tour of the West Indies would be named at Mumbai on March 21 after assessing the players' performance in the last two one-dayers against Zimbabwe. India are already without star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag due to injuries. Indian squad Sourav Ganguly (capt), Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Dinesh Mongia, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Sanjay Bangar, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Ajay Ratra (wk), Vijay Bharadwaj, Tinu Yohannan.
