Gilchrist homing in on No. 1
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 12, 2002

Adam Gilchrist is just three points short of usurping Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the PwC Ratings for Test batsmen. In the first two Tests against South Africa Gilchrist scored 366 runs off 345 balls, being dismissed just once. Matthew Hayden, who at Cape Town was out four runs short what would have been his fifth century in as many Tests, moves up to fourth place and is closing in on Gilchrist and Brian Lara. A double century for Kumar Sangakkara, another left-hand wicket-keeper/batsman, against Pakistan at Lahore lifted him to sixth in the batting ratings. With Andy Flower currently eighth, this is a golden era for this particular breed of player.

In the bowling, Muttiah Muralitharan has stretched his lead over Glenn McGrath to six points thanks to eight wickets in the Asian Test Championship final, while Shane Warne, fourth on 762 points, is at his best rating for four years.
