Klusener back for third Test Wisden CricInfo staff - March 12, 2002
Lance Klusener has been recalled to the South African squad for the third Test against Australia which starts at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday (March 15). Also recalled is David Terbrugge, 25, an accurate fast-medium-pace bowler who impressed in four Tests against West Indies in 1998-99 and toured Sri Lanka in 2000, but who has since been plagued by injuries. Klusener was dropped after dismal form in the first two Tests in Australia earlier this season, but took 10 wickets in a match for his provincial team, KwaZulu-Natal, against Griqualand West at the weekend. According to Rushdi Magiet, South Africa's convenor of selectors, Klusener was "running in and bowling fast" during the provincial game. He has been included in a squad of 13, and if he is chosen in the final XI it will be as a bowling allrounder. Klusener's poor form as a No. 6 batsman was one of the reasons for South Africa's downfall in the series in Australia which preceded the current one. Magiet said Andrew Hall, the allrounder who made his Test debut at Cape Town, had been included in the 13 but was a doubtful starter because of a sore back. Whether Klusener plays at Kingsmead will depend on Hall's recovery. Dewald Pretorius is dropped from the side that lost the second Test at Newlands by four wickets. Commenting on the defeat, Magiet said: "I was pleased at the way they played. But we still bowled far too many loose deliveries and were unable to create the necessary pressure." Mark Boucher will captain the side for the third successive Test, because regular skipper Shaun Pollock is still suffering from a side-strain. Justin Ontong, who was picked for the first Test but withdrew because of a hamstring injury, has recovered and will be 12th man.
