Kirtley's action cleared by ECB Wisden CricInfo staff - March 12, 2002
England fast bowler James Kirtley has been cleared of throwing by the ECB, after his action was questioned during England's one-day series against Zimbabwe in October 2001. Kirtley, who played in three of England's five matches on the tour, with best figures of 2 for 33 in the first game at Harare, was not considered for England's trips to India and New Zealand after suspicions about his action were raised by the ICC match referee, Colonel Naushad Ali. "James has worked very hard on his action under the guidance of ECB Bowling Advisor, Bob Cottam, biomechanical experts and the Sussex CCC coaching staff," said the ECB in a statement. "It is concluded that James has significantly improved his action and that he should be free to continue bowling in County and International cricket." "I'm obviously delighted with the decision," said Kirtley, "and look forward to the challenge of first division cricket with Sussex and concentrate on my performances there. Hopefully with these performances I will again enjoy the honour of representing my country." His county, Sussex, were equally delighted. "The result is fantastic news and allows James to now concentrate on regaining his place in the England One-Day side, "said a club spokesman. "James' record in first class and one-day cricket speaks for itself, and his emergence in Zimbabwe showed he has the pedigree to be a part of England's World Cup challenge. The Bowling Review Group will be forwarding an updated report on Kirtley to the ICC.
