India's highest against Zimbabwe
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 10, 2002
The partnership of 109 runs between Dinesh Mongia and Sourav Ganguly is not the best for the first wicket at this venue, but it's the best India have done, beating the 54 put on by Navjot Sidhu and Sachin Tendulkar against Australia in November 1996. The best still remains the 155 added by New Zealanders Nathan Astle and Bryan Young against Pakistan in May 1997.
Heath Streak, by conceding 72 runs in his 10 overs, just failed to concede the maximum by a Zimbabwe bowler in a match against India. Former team-mate and legspinner Paul Strang had conceded 73 runs in his 10 over spell at Colombo in September 1996.
India's total of 319 for 6 was their fifth highest in a one-dayer and their second highest at home, after the 376 for 2 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in November 1999. The only other total exceeding India's effort against Zimbabwe was the 363 for 3 scored by South Africa at Bulawayo in September 2001.
It was, however, India's best against Zimbabwe, eclipsing the total of 306 for 5 hit up in Ahmedabad in December 2000.
The 134-run partnership between Alistair Campbell and Travis Friend was the best for Zimbabwe for the second wicket against India, bettering the previous best of 125 between Campbell and Murray Goodwin at Bulwayo in September 1998. It was, in fact, Zimbabwe's second best for the second wicket in all one-dayers, just short of the 150 added by Grant Flower and Gavin Rennie against Bangladesh in Nairobi in November 1997.
It was also the best for the second wicket at Mohali,
obliterating the 88-run stand between Ajay Jadeja and Vinod Kambli
against South Africa in November 1993.
Dinesh Mongia, who has never had to bowl in his previous 11 matches, finished with figures of 3-31 in six overs - the best by an Indian spinner at this venue. Among slow bowlers, only Australian Shane Warne (4 for 36 versus West Indies in March 1996) has done better.
The match aggregate of 574 runs was the highest between the two countries, beating the 570 runs scored at Cuttack in April 1998.
Playing in his 188th match, Ganguly claimed his 26th Man of the Match award. His last one came against South Africa at East London in November 2001, in a losing cause.
