Wisden CricInfo staff - March 7, 2002
Douglas Marillier (50 in 21 balls) registered the fifth quickest fifty in one-day international history. He shares the honour with India's Ajit Agarkar and New Zealand's Lance Cairns. Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for the fastest 50 off 17 balls against Pakistan at Singapore (Padang) on April 7, 1996.
It was the quickest 50 against India bettering the 23 ball effort by Pakistani Salim Malik during his unbeaten 72 at Calcutta on February 18,1987. Marillier also became the first batsman in one-day history to register a 50 batting at No. 10, beating Abdur Razzaq's 46 against South Africa at Durban on April 3, 1998. The previous highest scored by a No. 10 against India was also by a Zimbabwean: 29 by Andy Whittall at Bulawayo on September 26, 1998.
Zimbabwe's 276 for 9 was the highest score made at Faridabad. Earlier, India had surpassed the previous highest: 273 for five by West Indies on October 17, 1994.
This was Zimbabwe's third one-wicket win in one-dayers, following victories by similar margins over India at Jodhpur on August 12, 2000 and New Zealand at Auckland on Januray 7, 2001. And this was India's third such defeat following losses to Pakistan at Sharjah in April 10, 1986 and to Zimbabwe at Jodhpur on 8-12-2000. India have now lost four of their five matches at Faridabad.
Dinesh Mongia opened the batting for India for the first time in his career, becoming the eighth left-hand batsman to do so. The others are WV Raman, Sourav Ganguly, Vinod Kambli, S Ramesh, Amay Khurasiya, S Sriram and Yuvraj Singh as the eighth left-hander to open in one-day internationals.
