Sangakkara strikes gold
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 7, 2002

Close Sri Lanka 447 for 5 (Sangakkara 230, Jayasuriya 88, Jayawardene 68) lead Pakistan 234 all out (Muralitharan 4-55) by 213 runs
scorecard A superb double-century by Kumar Sangakkara put Sri Lanka firmly in control at the end of the second day of the Asian Test Championship final at Lahore. Pakistan's much-discussed policy of preparing a pitch to suit their own seamers while stifling Muttiah Muralitharan appeared to have been fine in theory, but in practice it did not bother Sri Lanka one bit.

Resuming on 94 for 1, Sangakkara and an unusually subdued Sanath Jayasuriya were untroubled for one and a half sessions. By the time Abdur Razzaq dismissed Jayasuriya for 88, aided by a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Rashid Latif, the pair had added 203 for the second wicket and Pakistan were firmly on the back foot.

The day was dominated by Sangakkara. He was in punishing mood from the start, effortlessly driving and pulling the Pakistan bowlers. He reached his fourth Test hundred off just 142 balls in 220 minutes, and it took him only another 121 balls to bring up his 200.

None of the bowlers were spared. He hit three boundaries off one Shahid Afridi over to reach his century although the rest of Pakistan's four-pronged pace attack were also unimpressive, with none of them pitching the ball up to generate movement.

Sangakkara's innings wasn't quite chanceless though. He was dropped by Waqar Younis at midwicket off Shoaib Malik when on 119, and then again on 182 as Pakistan wilted.

With Mahela Jayawardene (68), Sangakkara put on 173 for the third wicket at a run a ball, and then a further 71 with Russel Arnold (44).

He was finally dismissed two runs short of the highest Test score by a wicketkeeper - Andy Flower's 232 against India last year - when he edged Razzaq to the slips three overs before bad light stopped play. Arnold fell in the following over, but Pakistan had long since stopped looking like a side who believed that this was a match they could win.
