Win the toss and bowl
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 6, 2002
The Nahar Singh Stadium at Faridabad has hosted five previous one-day internationals, four of which have involved India. The one that didn't was played in October 1996, when South Africa beat Australia by two wickets in a Titan Cup match.
India haven't had much success here, winning only one match. But that victory did come against Zimbabwe, almost nine years ago (March 19, 1993). India have lost to West Indies (twice) and South Africa.
Early-morning assistance for the seamers has prompted the captain winning the toss to bowl in three of the five matches. On two of those three occasions it resulted in victory.
The average first-innings score here is 248, while in the second innings, it's only 218. However, teams batting second have won three of the five matches.
West Indies' 273 for 5 against India in 1993-94 remains the highest total at Faridabad. India were then bowled out for 177 to lose by 96 runs – the heaviest margin of defeat in terms of runs.
Mohinder Amarnath's unbeaten 100 against West Indies in 1987-88 is the only century scored in a one-day international here. It wasn't enough to win the match, though – West Indies squeaked home in the last over with four wickets to spare.
Three bowlers have achieved a four-for here. Allan Donald got 4 for 31 for South Africa against Australia, for whom Paul Reiffel responded with 4 for 35. Sachin Tendulkar got the only other four-for – 4 for 56 against South Africa in 1999-2000.
Seamers have accounted for 41 of the 69 wickets to fall here (59.4%). For India, though, spinners have taken 17 out of 26 wickets. Overall, seamers have a marginally better economy rate – 4.48 to 4.60 runs per over – but a slightly higher average – 32.85 to 29.57.
Anil Kumble has achieved only moderate success at this venue. In three matches, he has taken four wickets for 130 runs at 32.50.
