Cullinan back to boost SA Wisden CricInfo staff - March 4, 2002
South Africa have recalled veteran batsman Daryll Cullinan for another joust with Shane Warne in a revamped team for the second Test which starts at Cape Town on Friday (March 8). Also back is unorthodox left-arm wrist spinner Paul Adams, while uncapped fast bowler Dewald Pretorius has been promoted after taking five wickets for South Africa A against the Australians in a match which ended at Port Elizabeth on Sunday. Regular captain Shaun Pollock was named in the team but will have to pass a fitness test. Allrounder Andrew Hall was picked as 12th man and will play if Pollock is unfit. Dropped were batsman Boeta Dippenaar, left-arm spinner Nicky Boje and fast bowler Andre Nel, while Allan Donald has retired after suffering a hamstring injury in the first Test. Cullinan's recall was announced on his 35th birthday after he made a polished 86 in the first innings while leading the South Africa A team. Cullinan has not played Test cricket this season after recovering from a knee injury, then missing selection for South Africa's recent tour of Australia. He has a career average of 44.21 after 70 Tests - but he has failed consistently against Australia, with a highest Test score of 47. He was publicly targeted by Warne, who has come out on top in several duels against Cullinan. Warne will be playing in his 100th Test in Cape Town. Adams, 24, has taken 96 wickets in 34 Tests but has not played for South Africa since appearing in a single Test in the West Indies last April. South Africa 1 Gary Kirsten, 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Daryll Cullinan, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 Neil McKenzie, 7 Shaun Pollock (capt), 8 Mark Boucher (wk), 9 Paul Adams, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Dewald Pretorius, Andrew Hall (12th man).
