Charl Willoughby
Wisden CricInfo staff - March 2, 2002
Wisden overview South Africa have not possessed a quality left-armer since the premature retirement of Brett Schultz in 1997-98. But Charl Willoughby, who played a solitary one-day match in Sharjah in 1999-2000, may fit the bill. He bowls from a short, angled run-up, is capable of swinging the ball into the right-hander at genuine pace, and has mastered an impressive slower delivery, as he demonstrated for South Africa A against Barbados in August 2000, when he took his best one-day figures of 6 for 24. He can even turn in a few overs of left-arm spin late in an innings. Willoughby still bears the scars of a horrific car-crash in 1994-95, but he has never let the experience cloud his sense of fun. In a televised domestic match in 1999-2000, he won a crate of beer from his team-mates by opening the bowling wearing a full set of "Jaws" metal teeth. Andrew Miller
