Premier League faces set backs
Shahryar Khan - 20 March 2002

There is sad news waiting for BNS, the most renowned and perhaps the only completely furnished stadium of Bangladesh, that it may deprive its huge crowd from watching the star-studded Premier Division Cricket League 2001-2002. Premier Division League had provided the most enthralling moments for its spectators, as it is the only limited over match league.

The 7th Bangladesh Games had just saw its finish and one would find it hard that there were four cricket pitches here in BNS even a month ago. The tracks are absolutely unplayable and will take quite a bit of time to make those doable for cricket. The league is going to start off from April, therefore, the organizers had to settle on some makeshift grounds to run the matches.

The matches will be played on three different venues in BKSP, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium and most likely in Fotullah Stadium that is near Narayanganj, a small town 15 miles away from the city. Some of the prominent cricketers and club officials are revealing dissatisfactory notion over playing in Fotullah that is so far away from the madding crowd.

" In BKSP we have accommodation for staying, but what about Fotullah? It will take hours to return to Dhaka, as we all are quite aware of the traffic jam starting from evening. Its real disappointing if you have to sit around for three or four hours in the bus after the match," said Khaled Masud, the present captain of the national squad, now playing for Victoria Club in Premier.

" Besides think about the weather condition its so torrid in mid April. We will have to play under the hottest sun of the year, which is so tough when you are playing limited over matches where there is no chance of relaxing. I am afraid a good number of matches would be rain affected too," said he.

Bangladesh has no International schedule either in April or May. The players from national squad or from other ranks are waiting for the League to be started. Last year they missed it cause they were in Zimbabwe at that time.
