Naveed Nawaz
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 27, 2002

Wisden overview
A tall left-hander, Naveed Nawaz has scored over 5000 first-class runs for his club side Nondescripts, at an average pushing 40. His international opportunities, however, have been limited in the extreme: until his surprise recall for the NatWest series in England in 2002, he had made just a solitary one-day appearance - against Zimbabwe in 1997-98. On that occasion, he failed to impress at No. 3, scratching around for a 23-ball 5. But he adapted well to English conditions, top-scored in a warm-up match against Somerset, and was selected for the opening match, against England at Trent Bridge. Despite the four-and-a-half year gap between internationals, the selectors have always had faith in his ability - in 1999 he captained Sri Lanka A on their tour of England, and though he was laid low with illness for much of the trip, he nevertheless retained the job the following winter in South Africa.
