Tendulkar vows to bounce back Wisden CricInfo staff - June 20, 2002
The Indians have arrived, and Wisden.com took a trip down to Lord's to witness their first practice session of the tour, and to talk to a few of the team. Coach John Wright, speaking at the team's press conference, talked of the disappointment of losing the fifth Test against West Indies. "We went there with a chance to take the series," he said, "but it was an opportunity missed." But Rahul Dravid was upbeat about India's prospects in this series. "This team has a good blend of youth and experience," he said, "and are close to achieving some good results." Dravid admitted that the loss of Javagal Srinath was a blow, and accepted that his decision to retire was likely to be final. "But," he added, "you never know with Sri!" Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, reflected on a mixed tour of the Caribbean. He took great pride in equalling Sir Donald Bradman's record of 29 Test hundreds - "the only time my name will ever be next to his" - but denied that he had had a poor series, pointing out that he managed 350 runs in seven innings. Tendulkar was adamant that the idea of retirement had not crossed his mind - and said he intended to go on playing for as long as he enjoyed the game. Anil Kumble, speaking during a net session, looked to have recovered from the broken jaw he suffered in during the drawn fourth Test in Antigua. "It was scary at the time," he admitted, "but so long as I felt I could carry on competing, I did." Kumble was confident about India's chances on the tour - "so long as the weather is fine and the wickets are dry." © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
