Bowlers need to do better: Aberhart Wisden CricInfo staff - June 20, 2002
New Zealand's coach Dennis Aberhart has called for an improved performance from his bowlers. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test at the Kensington Oval, Aberhart told reporters that none of the team's bowlers had done their job properly during the five-match one-day series, which WestIndies won 3-1. "None of the bowlers have put their hands up. We've been bowling too many four balls. It's a matter of getting the ball in the right place." Aberhart said New Zealand's bowlers had failed to put the West Indian batsmen under pressure, especially in the final match when West Indies overhauled a target of 291. "We have to make them work hard and play the rash shots." Fast bowler Shane Bond and spinner Daniel Vettori would play in the first Test, but main strike bowler Daryl Tuffey was not assured of a place in the team, revealed Aberhart. "Tuffey has been very disappointing on this trip. He needs to perform better than he has done so far." Aberhart also hinted at a reshuffle in the batting order, saying opening batsman Matthew Horne may miss out in the first Test, with Lou Vincent joining Mark Richardson to allow allrounder Chris Harris to bat at number four. The 32-year-old Harris has revitalised his international career with an impressive performance in the Test series against England. Once seen as a one-day specialist, Harris could now become a specialist Test batsman 12 years after his international debut. West Indies coach Roger Harper said pace bowler Merv Dillon, absent from the last one-day match with a back injury, bowled in the nets on Wednesday and would bowl again on Thursday to ensure he was fit for the Test. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, promoted to open the batting in the one-day series, would drop back down the order to his specialist number six position.
