The leopard who changed his dots
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 16, 2002

Talk about a character change. Sanath Jayasuriya arrived in England with a reputation as a bit of a batting bully. He's the man who, facing his first ball in a Test at Colombo in 1993 with four needed to win, swung Phil Tufnell for six. And he pulverised England in the 1996 World Cup quarter-final, smashing 82 from 44 balls. But scores of 18, 8 and 12 in this series have sapped his confidence. In the first innings at Old Trafford he moved down the order to No. 6, and moved down the gears into first.

He did accumulate 35, but from 105 balls. There were none of the flashing drives, and only an occasional sign of attack. He collected no runs at all through mid-off or mid-on, and 23 runs came from pushes off the legs. There were only two fours (both off Giles), and 83 dot-balls. How the mighty have fallen.
