Rumours grow of Sri Lankan unrest Wisden CricInfo staff - June 16, 2002
The rumours that all is not well within the Sri Lankan camp gathered momentum with the news that bowling coach Daryl Foster has walked out after a row over expenses, less than 24 hours after it was announced that team manager Chandra Schaffter was being relieved of his position. Foster left the squad after a claim for £610 reimbursement to visit his seriously ill grand-daughter in Australia was turned down. "This is something between me and the board," he said. "We had a slight dispute with a request. I made it clear that unless certain things happen I would not be coming back and I'll have to stick to that." Schaffter denied reports that he had been sacked, but admitted that he will be standing down at the end of the tour. "My contract was only for four or five months anyway," he told the BBC. "It was always agreed that at the end of this tour the board and I would review the situation. The board are going to have appoint someone at the end of the series. I wouldn't have wanted to carry on anyway." Schaffter also denied suggestions that he had had a row with Guy de Alwis, Sri Lanka's new chairman of selectors. It was widely reported that de Alwis complained to board after being refused access to team's dressing room before the start of the Old Trafford Test. "He and I have been friends for over 20 years," said Schaffter. "We wouldn't have a row over something [selection] I have no control over." Schaffter is expected to be replaced by his immediate predecessor Air Commodore Ajith Jayasekera, a former first-class cricketer, after the conclusion of the one-day NatWest series in England, in which India are also participating.
