Sri Lanka sack their manager Wisden CricInfo staff - June 15, 2002
Sri Lanka are reported to have sacked their team manager, ChandraSchaffter, following a disagreement with the chairman of selectors, Guy de Alwis. Schaffter, 72, will be replaced by Air Commodore Ajith Jayasekera, a former manager and his immediate predecessor, after the conclusion of the one-day triangular series next month. Anura Tennekoon, chief executive of the Sri Lankan cricket board, broke the news to Shaffter during a telephone conversation before the start of the third day's play at Old Trafford. It is claimed that the decision to end his contract followed a complaint from de Alwis, that he had been denied entry to the dressing room during the second Test at Edgbaston. But Shaffter vehemently denies the allegation: "Guy de Alwis never requested access to the dressing room, so how could I possibly deny it?"
