Condon vows to rid cricket of corruption
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 11, 2002

Paul Condon, director of ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), has promised to eliminatecorruption from cricket.

Condon, who was introducing a team of five security specialists brought in to protect the game from future scandals.

"The international game now has a highly professional security infrastructure," Lord Condon said, "that will provide cricket with a discreet but effective long-term deterrent.

"The aim is to rid cricket from corruption once and for all, but in a fashion that does not inhibit the enjoyment of players and those who follow the game."

Of the five security specialists four, like Condon, have police backgrounds, while the other is a former senior army officer.

They will be based in Delhi, Lahore, London, Johannesburg and Sydney.

At least one of the five will be present for every ICC-sanctioned tournament and tour.

Condon was asked by ICC to investigate match-fixing and illegal betting in the wake of the Hansie Cronje scandal. His 2001 report called for the creation of the ACU.
