A whiff of Beef Wisden CricInfo staff - July 29, 2002
After a modest performance in the first Test at Lord's, Ian Botham was the key man in England's series-levelling victory in Barbados. He whacked 73 in the first innings, and followed up with a fierce, unbeaten 101 in the second. Our graph shows where the Rest of the World bowlers bowled to Botham in that second innings. He was utterly merciless on anything loose, and creamed 51 runs off 32 short deliveries. That's a startling rate of nearly ten an over. Time and again it was banged in short, and time and again Botham took it on. Sometimes he wasn't even looking at the ball. For Dennis Lillee, it was like Old Trafford 1981 all over again. In all Botham faced only 142 balls, and walloped 11 fours and three sixes. Botham managed to squeeze 46 runs for the last two wickets with Fred Trueman and Brian Statham. Those partnerships could not have been more crucial - England eventually won by 45 runs. Rob Smyth is on the staff of Wisden.com. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
