Imperious
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 29, 2002

He made 265 runs, was out only once - and Len Hutton still finished on the losing side in the first Test at Lord's. Our graph shows where Hutton scored his runs during his second-innings 136. His most profitable area, not surprisingly, was through the covers, where he scored 32% of his runs (44 out of 136) with a series of elegant drives. He was also fluent through midwicket, where he scored 20 runs, including an imperious lofted flick for six off Shane Warne.

When Hutton finally fell lbw to Muttiah Muralitharan, the last man out in the second innings, he had batted for over 17 hours and faced 736 balls. And he scored 265 runs, the small matter of 45% of his team's total. Rarely has anyone done so much in a losing cause.

Rob Smyth is on the staff of Wisden.com.
