Sri Lanka rub it in Wisden CricInfo staff - July 29, 2002
Close Sri Lanka 373 (Jayasuriya 85) and 25 for 0 lead Bangladesh 164 (Baisya 52*, Jayasuriya 3-17) by 234 runs Chamila Gamage became the first Sri Lankan to take a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket as Bangladesh collapsed in familiar style in the second Test in Colombo. In reply to Sri Lanka's 373, Bangladesh fell away for 164, their tenth sub-200 score in a row. But Sanath Jayasuriya decided not to enforce the follow-on, and at the close his side were 25 for 0, a lead of 234. With three days still to go, Sri Lanka's first victory without Muttiah Muralitharan is already a formality. That is in no small part thanks to the performance of Gamage. He started the day by thumping 40 off 46 balls in a last-wicket partnership of 64 with Charitha Buddika. Gamage was only five runs away from equalling the highest score by a No. 11 on debut when he was caught off Talha Jubair. Soon after, Galage achieved a feat that was well worth savouring. He became the 13th man to take a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket, when he bowled Mohammad Ashraful for 1 off the inside-edge. Bangladesh slid to 86 for 7 before the debutants Alok Kapali (39) and Tapash Baisya (52*) salvaged a bit of pride. Baisya took them within a whisker of avoiding the follow-on – he added 40 for the ninth wicket with Manjural Islam, who made a 72-minute duck – but Jayasuriya cleaned them up with 3 for 17. There were also two wickets for Gamage, Buddika and Thilan Samaraweera. Pickings don't come much easier than this, and Bangladesh are well on the way to their 12th defeat in 13 Tests.
