'A dream come true' Wisden CricInfo staff - July 26, 2002
If you didn't catch the Indian stars picking up their prizes at the Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century Awards on Tuesday night, don't worry - Wisden Online have picked out the ceremony highlights. First to receive a prize was Mushtaq Ali, who won the Wisden Special Award as the first Indian to score a century in an overseas Test. Mushtaq, who scored 112 at Old Trafford in 1936, said: "This is the greatest day of my life, I've seen many awards, but this is the finest function I've attended". Sunil Gavaskar picked up the Team of the Century Award, as captain of the side who won the World Championship of Cricket in Australia in 1984-85. Gavaskar expressed his surprise at the award and said he would have voted for the 1983 World Cup winning team. Possibly the two most predictable winners of the evening were Gundappa Viswanath, who picked up the Spirit of Cricket award, and VVS Laxman, the Best Batting Award. Laxman beamed with pride and thanked Wisden not only for the award but having the chance to meet the cricketing legends of his country. He called it "a dream come true". The Best Bowling performance came from the legendary Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, who hurried England to a famous defeat at The Oval in 1971.
The People's Choice award went to the people's favourite, Sachin Tendulkar. He addressed his adoring audience by telling them he started playing when Kapil Dev lifted that World Cup in 1983 and he went on to thank his family and friends - in particular his best mate Vinod Kambli, who was with him on stage - for making him a better cricketer. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
