Stand and deliver Wisden CricInfo staff - July 26, 2002
The selection of Simon Jones always had the potential to bring fireworks - but nobody expected them to be with the bat. Jones whacked 44 off 43 balls, just two short of his highest score in any first-class match. Our graph shows where Jones scored his runs. He was at his most dangerous when the ball did not pitch on the stumps, as this gave him room to free his arms and essay those muscular, stand-and-deliver clumps. Off balls that pitched outside off stump, Jones larruped 26 off 16 balls, including a big six down the ground off Zaheer Khan. But he was most productive against Anil Kumble (20 off 18 balls) and Ajit Agarkar (13 off 6). Jones scored over 90% of his runs off the front foot (40 out of 44), an apt statistic for a scene-stealing innings. It was all very reminiscent of the batting debut of another fast bowler - Darren Gough, who smacked 65 against New Zealand at Old Trafford in 1994. As the cliché goes, if Jones has half as good a Test career as Gough, he'll be a happy man. Rob Smyth is on the staff of Wisden.com. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
