Jayasuriya unhappy with selectors Wisden CricInfo staff - July 24, 2002
Sanath Jayasuriya has protested against the team chosen by the Sri Lankan selectors for the second Test against Bangladesh on Sunday, saying that the players are inexperienced, and that he has not even met many of them. "Basically, it was the three selectors who chose the side, I have no control over them," said Jayasuriya. "I told them I wanted the best side to play most of the time. We played the best side in the first Test, but they wanted six or seven changes in the second Test." "I haven't played with anybody and don't know most of the youngsters who have been selected for the second Test. The bowlers I have are not experienced at all. The fast bowlers will have to work hard to get wickets. They have been picked to play for Sri Lanka and they will have to play." Jayasuriya was also disappointed that Muttiah Muralitharan had been omitted: "If Murali is fit we should always try and play him." Muralitharan took 10 wickets in the first Test as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 196 runs inside three days, but has been left out along with Dilhara Fernando, Sri Lanka's quickest bowler, and the batsmen Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold and Kumar Sangakarra. "Even in the batting you need a little bit of experience," said Jayasuriya. "We were 56 for 3 the other day, but because of the experience, we came out of it and managed to put up a big total through Kumar [Sangakkara], Aravinda [de Silva] and myself. If something happens similarly, you need some experienced players." A board official, however, said there were no plans for a U-turn.
