The perfect choice Wisden CricInfo staff - July 24, 2002
Do you agree with the result? To send us your views on the award please click here. It was a very pleasant surprise to hear that Kapil Dev has been nominated the Indian Cricketer of the Century. Hearty congratulations to him! If there was ever a cricketer in India who was immensely talented, always gave it his best and was a hands-on leader, it was Kapil Dev. As an allrounder he put Indian cricket on the world map and his World Cup triumph is now legendary. We miss him in the field now - his smooth run-up, his away-swing, the stylish hook or simply his sheer positive attitude Shyamala Bhat Great choice, because he had to struggle on docile wickets, and without proper support from the other end. A good enough captain, who led us to a memorable victory at Lord's Ishan Ratra I was a village boy studying my ninth standard, with no electricity in our rural house. All I could afford was to listen to our pocket radio, running on batteries. Still I remember how the Kapil Devils won that match around 11 pm at night. Our joy knew no bounds! In the dark I didn't know how to celebrate! So I just cracked some firecrackers in that village to inform my friends that we have won! Though I am the CEO of a dotcom now, I feel indebted for his never-ending spirit. Kapil is the right choice. Swami Jivan Apthakam Can't agree more with Kapil's choice as the Indian Cricketer of the Century. Congratulations Kapil! I guess the people who voted for Sachin Tendulkar for the People's Choice award have no clue of what Kapil Dev has done for Indian cricket. Though Sachin is a great player, he should have been second that poll. Rao No one deserved the Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century award other than the great man himself, Kapil Dev. I laud the decision taken by the jury of Wisden, and congratulate the man who gave so much to Indian Cricket. Sundeep Bhatia Kapil Dev is definitely the greatest cricketer India has ever produced. He always led by example, and played like a true sportsman. Wisden has rightly honoured him with the Award. Rajesh Patnaik Kapil Dev was a big bustling talent who traded pace for guile and reaped rich rewards for it. Kapil isn't the greatest Indian bowler ever (that honour arguably went to Chandra). Neither was he a batsman with the wondrous ability of Gavaskar and Tendulkar. But Kapil Dev was more than the sum of all his talents. The quintessential allrounder who made bowlers think twice before they bounced him when he batted - first in the fear of being smashed into the stands and then having their bats hang out in shame when he came back to bowl his deadly outswingers. Anandam Mamidipudi No Indian, except perhaps Tendulkar, comes close to the excitement (including pain) Kapil Dev brought. Besides the immense contribution with bat and ball, he reminded kids that the game is played for enjoyment. I can never forget his whirlwind innings in his debut series against Pakistan; his 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup; his four sixes in a row to save the follow-on at Lord's in 1990; the day he bowled Australia out for 83 to square the series; his century in the tied Test at Madras. Tendulkar comes very close, except that his contribution spanned two different centuries. Gavaskar was a great accumulator of runs, but his negative approach almost brought Test cricket to extinction in India. The old timers like Hazare and Merchant and Amarnath existed as great players only in my grandpa's mind. Their record doesn't justify being in the top three. Amit Patel How you can forget Mohinder Amarnath's batting performances in West Indies and Pakistan against the likes of Imran and Garner. I feel the nominations are biased and so whole of this exercise is just a joke; a bad name on Wisden. Hope God will justify your action – someday. Rajeev Mohnot Excellent Choice. Congratulations on honouring the most complete cricketer that India has ever produced. Kapil has been one of the greatest allrounders the world has ever produced. I am lucky to have lived in an era when Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee all played at the same time. Kudos to you all. Sree Pulapaka I am not sure I liked the idea of Kapil winning. It does not reflect his cricketing abilities in any way. He was a pioneer in more ways than one and was a superb cricketer. But the whole match-fixing controversy has cast a doubt and although nothing has been proved, the whole image of Kapil has taken a beating. I think Sachin deserved it, not just for being the champion batsman, but also for being the symbol of integrity that the Indian Cricketer of the Century should stand for. He is the most popular cricketer ever and the only people who stayed away from him were the bookmakers. Atul Dalmia Perfect choice. Kapil Dev was one of the greatest allrounders and the first good fast bowler of India, a pioneer. A gutsy captain and a positive influence on future batsmen, bowlers, fielders (who can forget his catch to dimiss Viv Richards in the 1983 final, which won the match for India) and of course allrounders. God bless Kapil's mom. Ranjitt Kapil deserved this award. It is great news for a Kapil fan like me. This award has once again proved that the most popular player (Tendulkar) may not be the best. It is victory of facts over hype. Rajeev Saxena
