Kapil Dev was named as the Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century at a glittering awards event in London this evening. Kapil, who's now 43, is India's greatest-ever allrounder - in 131 Tests he scored 5248 runs and took 434 wickets, a record at the time. He also captained India to their famous victory over West Indies in the 1983 World Cup final. This award cements Kapil Dev's place in history too, after a panel of influential judges named him as the best Indian player of the last century. In the poll Kapil came out on top, just ahead of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, while great names from India's cricket past like CK Nayudu and Vinoo Mankad were not forgotten. The following were the other winners:
Best Batting Performance of the Century
Best Bowling Performance of the Century
Team of the Century
Spirit of Cricket
The People's Choice The awards were presented during a televised ceremony at Wembley Stadium, and was followed by a gala dinner in the Long Room at Lord's, where India will be doing battle with England again in the first Test which starts on Thursday.
