Kapil slams Ganguly
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 17, 2002

Kapil Dev has criticised Sourav Ganguly, India's captain, for taking his shirt off after his team's remarkable victory in the NatWest Series final at Lord's. "A captain getting carried away is quite normal," Kapil said, "but he should know how to show his emotions. I was taken aback when he took off his shirt, though I knew it was an emotional outburst."

Ganguly waved his shirt to the crowd from the balcony of the dressing-room after his team had successfully chased an improbable 326-run target to secure a famous victory.

"Had such an act been done by a youngster, I wouldn't have minded", Kapil added. "But Ganguly is after all the skipper."

Kapil also said India still have to improve their bowling despite that stunning Lord's win: "I think the bowlers lack maturity. Maybe they will mature in the coming days. They need a lot of assistance from the fielders, who also have to improve.

"There are hundreds of other areas in which the side needs improvement. We are thrilled and happy with the victory at Lord's, but the problem is expectations have sky-rocketed."
