Young guns kept back in England Wisden CricInfo staff - July 16, 2002
Mohammad Kaif and Dinesh Mongia are staying on in England with the Indian Test squad, and will not return home as originally scheduled, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Oddly though, they will not actually be part of the squad, and will not be eligible to be selected for Tests. BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya had called an emergency meeting in Kolkata immediately after India's remarkable win in the finals of the NatWest Trophy, and it was expected that matchwinners Kaif and Yuvraj Singh would be asked to stay back with the Test team. An injury to Yuvraj put paid to his inclusion in the Test squad, but after three weeks recuperation in India, he will be joining the squad again in England, though like Kaif and Mongia, he won't play any Tests there. Dalmiya explained the decision of having Kaif and Mongia travel with the team without actually being part of the squad by pointing out that there was no domestic cricket in India anyway till September, and by staying in England, the players would remain match-fit for the ICC Trophy in Sri Lanka immediately after the Tests in England get over. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
